Resource Mother's Program

Alexandria & Fairfax Resource Mothers Program: Both programs provide a combination of social support, education, and practical assistance to teens as the teen experiences the crisis of a teen pregnancy and makes the transition to parenthood, has demonstrated effectiveness in improving the birth outcomes for the high-risk pregnant teen and her family. The participants in the Resource Mothers Program, have improved birth outcomes when compared to their contemporaries in their own communities. Key primary program goals are the reduction of infant mortality and increasing access to early, regular prenatal care. Comprehensive support services commence during the early stages of the prenatal period and continue through the child's first birthday.  In FY 2006-2007, the Alexandria and Fairfax Resource Mothers programs served a total of 355 pregnant and parenting teen girls and their babies. A total of 98% of the babies of program participants were delivered at healthy birth weights.

Girls Empowered to Move Towards Success (GEMS) Program: A companion component to the Alexandria Resource Mothers Program, the GEMS program provided adult mentoring relationships, involvement in community activities, health education, and educational and career exploration opportunities for siblings of Resource Mothers Program pregnant or parenting teen clients. In a supportive group setting, individual leadership skills were developed and goals  established to empower young women to lead productive lives.  During FY 2006-2007 a total of 17 girls, ages 9-15, benefited from  program participation.

Male Teen Responsibility Program: This program provided curriculum-based early intervention services designed to foster responsible behavior and positive lifestyle choices for high-risk boys. The program is designed to candidly explore the impact of premature parenting on the lives of young men. During FY 2006-2007 we served 27 young males.
