Guild - About Us

OUR MISSION:  As an auxiliary of the Northern Virginia Urban League (NOVAUL), the Guild’s mission is to promote an agenda which supports the Northern Virginia Urban League (NOVAUL) which is to advocate for and provide services to African Americans and other disadvantaged.

OUR HISTORY:  The National Urban League Guild was organized in 1942 by Mrs. Mollie Moon of New York City.  She was the Guild’s founder and first president and she served as the National Guild President until her death in 1991. In May 1995, Carlton and Margaret Stockton, hosted a group of approximately fifty persons to assess their interest in forming a Guild in Alexandria. There was great enthusiasm in favor of the idea and the process was accomplished quickly and efficiently.  In August 1996, at the National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, NOVAUL Guild received its charter.

OUR FOCUS:  The NOVAUL Guild brings together people who are interested in enhancing the quality of life for all people in the community through the promotion of intercultural, interracial, and community service activities.  Guilders strongly believe that “Our Children Are Our Destiny”, therefore our focus is on activities involving youth.  Some of the Guild activities include:

  • Conducting PSAT workshops
  • Sponsoring students who need financial assistance to take the SAT
  • Awarding a $5,000 scholarship to college-bound students
  • Financial contributions to the NOVAUL Capital Campaign Fund
  • Sponsoring NULITES attendance at summer camp and the Urban League National Conference and National Achievers Society
  • Supporting the Child & Family Network Preschool Program
  • Providing other financial and in-kind support for NOVAUL activities
  • Sponsoring the Grandfathers Mentoring Program
  • Sponsoring a student, for the past two years, to attend the Mayors’ International Conference in Scotland.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:  Since 1998, the Guild’s signature fundraising event has been the Annual Ball which is held during the Christmas holiday season. We have also had successful theater nights and silent auctions. For the past two years, NOVAUL Guild has been recognized at the National Conference for its outstanding financial support of NOVAUL, having earned the Community Service and Fundraiser of the Year awards.

NOVAUL Guild holds active membership in the Eastern Region on the National Council of Urban League Guilds.   It is noteworthy that our own Darhyl Jasper, currently serves as Vice-President of the National Council of Urban League Guilds, and has served as the Eastern Regional Coordinator and past President of the NOVAUL Guild.  The Guild continues to grow, gain respect and recognition at the national level.

YOUR INVITATION: We welcome new people, new ideas and a commitment to serve as we go forward in the movement. Membership is open to men and women interested in providing support for the Urban League’s mission.
