ELLE
This swinging new musical takes you inside the heart and soul of the First Lady of Song – Ella Fitzgerald. While she’s rehearsing for an important 1966 concert, Ella’s producer requests that she add “patter” about her life to the show. With this daunting task before her, Ella starts to revisit the people and events of her past. Tina Fabrique (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Crowns) returns as one of the world's greatest jazz singers, performing such hits as “That Old Black Magic,” “A Tiskit, A Tasket” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” “Fabrique evokes the maternal musical spirit of Miss Ella with remarkable skill and finesse; her must-see performance has audiences grooving throughout the shows two dozen numbers.” – Variety

GREAT DEBATERS
Special Advanced Screening
Drawing inspiration from the true story of a temperamental debate coach who molded the students of a small East Texas college into a formidable team that gave Harvard's squad a run for their money in the 1930s, Denzel Washington's The Great Debaters features the director himself as the ambitious educator, and Forest Whitaker as the resentful father of a student whose loyalties now lie almost exclusively with his coach. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

THE WOMEN OF BREWSTER PLACE
Based on Gloria Naylor’s best selling novel, this soaring musical adaptation of The Women of Brewster Place chronicles the dreams and realities of ten diverse African American women who live in a decaying housing project on a dead-end street. This powerful, humorous, and uplifting musical from three-time Drama Desk Award-nominee Tim Acito features a dynamic new musical score, ranging from Rhythm and Blues to Funk to Gospel. Molly Smith directs a cast that includes Harriett D. Foy and Marva Hicks. This world premiere will be one of the most anticipated events of the D.C. theater season.

EMERGENCE-SEE
Following sold out performances and standing ovations during a one-weekend run in the Kreeger in February 2007, Daniel Beaty returns in his electrifying one-man show. In this stirring commentary on modern black life, a slave ship rises out of the Hudson River in 2006 in front of the Statue of Liberty, sending New York City into a whirlwind of emotion. Through vivid imagery, slam poetry and song, Daniel Beaty portrays a multitude of characters whose responses to the slave ship reflect on issues of identity and personal freedom.
